Why Drama?
Having grown up with theatre myself, I know countless ways that drama will shape and enrich our students’ lives. To begin with, drama is rooted in communication. As students explore the art form, they learn new and different ways to express themselves and build confidence in public speaking.
Drama also teaches creativity, tolerance and empathy. Students do an ample amount of role play in drama, allowing them the opportunity to walk in another person’s shoes. Students’ work is also often project-based, designed to hone their collaboration skills.
Last, but certainly not least, drama is a strong teaching tool for other disciplines. As the old Chinese Proverb says, Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and I'll understand. Through drama, students will discover new ways to understand the work they are already doing in their homerooms in literacy, math, science, and social studies.
